  1. Working Through the Fear: Support for Marginalized Ethnic and Religious Groups in a Contested Political Climate
  2. Honors Multipurpose Room 1303
  3. Since the 2016 elections, threats to Jewish and Muslim communities have increased exponentially. By mid-February, anti-Semitic crimes in New York City alone had jumped by 115 percent—more than any other hate crime reported. In the United States hate groups have grown for a second year in a row, with anti-Muslim groups experiencing the largest growth: rising from 34 in 2015 to 101 in 2016. Anti-Muslim assaults had reach 9/11 era levels in 2015 and 2016. In her talk, Dr. Ronnie Olesker of St. Lawrence University explores her journey into working with marginalized ethnic and religious communities, and asks what Americans can do to combat the surge in hate crimes across the country in a climate of political uncertainty and religious intolerance. The interactive discussion will include a short bystander training session for audience members interested in serving as allies for religious (and other) communities at risk.
