Undergraduate research proposals

The Honors College seeks to engage students in advanced research at the university by providing opportunities for undergraduates to work collaboratively with faculty. In addition to research during the academic year, The Honors College administers two summer undergraduate research programs. Faculty and students from all disciplines and fields of study are welcome to participate.

Honors Summer Freshman Research Institute

The Summer Freshman Research Institute offers up to 20 newly admitted honors students the opportunity to learn about undergraduate research opportunities at VCU during a one-week research program. The institute introduces incoming students to the university while creating a culture where undergraduate research is expected and valued. Instructors are also given the opportunity to explore creative ways of teaching in a small-group environment.

The proposals deadline will soon be announced.

Honors Summer Undergraduate Research Program

The primary goal of HSURP is to give undergraduate honors students the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors in an intensive summer research experience. The nine-week program is designed to generate excitement among participants about careers in their respective research areas, as well as prepare students to gain admission to competitive graduate programs. The research experience is enriched with weekly workshops focusing on applying to graduate school and résumé development. Following the program, faculty mentors will offer guidance to students presenting research at local, regional and national undergraduate research conferences.

Proposals received by Jan. 9, 2017, will be given priority consideration. For information on selection criteria, stipends and student selection, review the HSURP guidelines [PDF].
