Mary Boyes directs the Honors Writing program and teaches multiple sections of Honors 200, as well as creative, special topics courses. Boyes serves as a resource for students engaged in writing and research and as the Honors coordinator for the National Conference of Undergraduate Research. Boyes is an advisor for the Honors 200 TA Program, PECS, Open-Honors Connect, SpeakEasy, the Classic Literature Society, and the Honors Arts Advisory Board. A recent recipient of the ConnectEd Teaching Award, Boyes holds a B.A. in English from The College of William & Mary and earned an M.F.A. in creative writing from VCU. Prior to her work at VCU, Boyes taught at Tusculum College, Ramapo College of New Jersey, the University of Richmond, and Virginia Union University. Boyes is also an affiliate faculty member of Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at VCU.

Boyes founded and serves on the advisory board for the Tusculum Review. She also serves on the board of the Sourwood Forest Artist Residency. A recent Health Humanities Fellow, Boyes is a member of the Scholarship Committee for the Bedford Community Health Foundation.

A recipient of the Tennessee Commission for the Arts Individual Fellowship in fiction and a Pushcart Prize nominee, Boyes has published in Fiction International, Rhino, cAke, Hawaii Pacific Review, and Spoon River, among others. Boyes is the author of Gingko, Pigeon, Light: A Fable and co-editor, with Peter Scheckner, of the anthology, The Way We Work: Contemporary Writings about Americans and Their Work Experience from Vanderbilt University Press. Her collaborative work with the sculptor, Tracey Cockrell, has been featured recently at the University of Massachusetts, Amerherst, and in the Art in the Park Biennial in Worcester, MA.
