A recent study abroad experience proved transformative for this Honors student

Tobi Ojo in Italy during the Honors study abroad trip

Tobi Ojo, a junior in the Honors College majoring in Health Services and Sociology, was able to take part in an Honors study abroad trip over this past summer. Read about Tobi's experience and how this opportunity was an impactful experience.

What opportunity did you recently pursue?

I had the opportunity to study abroad in Sorrento, Italy at the Sant’Anna Institute where I had the opportunity to be a Global Exploration and Community Engagement Ambassador. While being immersed within the Italian culture through activities and classes, I got to mentor first-year Honors College students.

What did you gain from this experience?

I developed an understanding of how one’s environment impacts their culture. In addition to this, I learned that culture can evolve and take different meanings. Without acknowledging the history of culture practices and aspects , we fail to be open minded and our bias appears.

How do you feel Honors helped you?

The Honors College provided me the opportunity to study abroad at the capacity I felt comfortable with. The activities I participated in were life changing and memorable.

What advice do you have for younger students?

My advice is to try study abroad. It’s a wonderful opportunity and there are so many programs with different lengths. This provides various opportunities to explore other cultures and environments at your capacity.
