A summer in medicine: Honors Junior takes part in prestigious internship

Just Wade wearing a white lab coatJustin Wade, a junior in the Honors College majoring in Biology in the College of Humanities and Sciences, spent his summer learning more about a career in medicine through a prestigious internship program housed out of the University of Virginia. Read more about Wade and his internship experience, as well as his plans for the future, below.

What did you do this past summer?

I participated in the Summer Medical Leadership Program at the University of Virginia. I met national leaders of healthcare who work in a variety of roles, observed many specialties in the hospital and clinic and worked on my application to medical school.

What did you gain from this experience?

I gained a network of mentors and peers from across the country who will advocate for me in spaces I would benefit from being in, and who can support me as I continue to grow as a person. Additionally, we were provided with a third-party MCAT study course, which will help me as I prepare to test next year.

How do you feel Honors helped you prepare for this experience?

The impetus to participate in internships came from my desire to compete for a spot in the Preferred Applicant Program, as well as to make myself a stronger applicant for the regular admissions cycle to medical school.

What advice do you have for younger students?

Be on the lookout for similar programs! It took me a long time to perfect my application before it was due early in spring.
