A Virginia Commonwealth University Honors College faculty member has been selected for a prestigious annual award given to faculty at VCU who “push the boundaries of their disciplines, forge collaboration and catalyze new ways of thinking and learning.”

Christy Tyndall, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Honors College and director of student wellbeing, was announced as a recipient of a Pedagogical Excellence and Innovation Award (PEIA) from VCU.

“Shaping the leaders and visionaries of the next generation starts in the classroom,” said Arturo P. Saavedra, M.D., Ph.D., executive vice president and provost for VCU. “Our PEIA winners ignite curiosity, foster deep learning and transform the lives of students every single semester. Through classroom creativity and care, they elevate the excellence of our entire university and demonstrate how teaching is both an art and a craft.”

Tyndall was recognized in large part for her curricular work around wellbeing. Over the last eight years in Honors, Tyndall has created a robust wellbeing program in the Honors College through a combination of curriculum, extracurricular programming and resources that emphasize wellbeing and mindfulness. She has helped advance the scholarship of teaching and learning on wellbeing at the local and national levels, while also developing her own wellbeing model that she uses throughout all of her work in Honors and at VCU.

“Dr. Tyndall’s dedication to her students and commitment to ensuring that they receive the most from their educational journey has an immeasurable impact upon their lives,” said Honors College Dean Scott Breuinger, Ph.D. “She is helping students understand wellbeing and incorporate it into their daily lives through her teaching.”
