Honors student receives VCU ‘Rising Star’ Student Award; Honors program that supports high-school students through mentorship also wins award

Adam Vo holding the Rising Star Student AwardA Virginia Commonwealth University Honors College student has been selected as the recipient of the Rising Star Student Award, an annual award given out by the VCU Student Government Association and the VCU Student Organization Office. 

Adam Vo, an Honors College senior majoring in biology in the College of Humanities and Sciences, was selected for the award for his work with the Honors College Personalized Exploration for College Success (PECS) program. PECS provides peer-mentoring to high-school students and assists provides guidance with writing college admissions essays.

Vo’s Rising Star award, which is part of the VCU Student Leadership Awards, “is presented to an undergraduate student who has provided distinguished service in their first leadership role(s) at VCU and demonstrated a potential for continued leadership.” 

Honors College Associate Professor Mary Boyes, who serves as the faculty adviser for PECS,  said since Vo has assumed a leadership role within PECS he has helped the program grow and increase its reach and impact. 

In addition to Vo’s individual award, PECS also received the Outstanding Community Engagement by a Student or Group of Students Award. The award, which is presented by the VCU Division of Community Engagement, “recognizes exceptional dedication to meaningful community partnerships and the positive impact an organization has made through its engagement efforts.”
